BERLIN PAINTER VOLUTE  KRATER

Artist of incredible refinement and delicacy.
Varying viewpoints used: frontal, profile, ¾
Figures are slender, elegant, and well-muscled. Muscles drawn in with controlled use of dilute glaze. Subjects often frozen in motion – tensed. Also drawn with a minimum of lines.
Liked to spotlight a single character against a black background. As if floating on the vase.
All detail place on neck and handles of vases to emphasis its elegant volute shape.

SIDE A           Achilles dueling with Memnon.
W-shaped composition.

Memnon          -    holds up shield to block Achilles’ spear.
-          his mother Eos (Dawn) stands behind her with her hand raised realising he is about to die. It was said that Eos’ tears for her dead son is the morning dew.
-          Memnon fights in place of Nestor whose son (Antilaos) was killed by Achilles. Nestor is too old to fight though so Memnon fights instead.
-          Memnons cheek guard is up

Achilles            -     his mother Thetis also stands behind her son with her arm raised, but  she is urging her son on.
-          Achilles has his cheek guard down

Both men are nude which confirms their heroic status (mortals would be armed).

Thickness of women’s fabric suggested by the closely spaced lines = fine fabric

Mirror like symmetry   -     2 warriors framed by 2 women
-          2 women with outstretched arms.
-          Achilles’ twisting ¾ pose mirrors taut back view of Memnon.

SIDE B           Achilles prepares to deal the fatal blow to Hektor.
Hektor          -           is already wounded and stumbling back under the onslaught.
-           is totally unprotected with his large shied twisted around behind him leaving his body defenseless.
-          off balance, his spear points down as blood comes from his side.

Achilles            -           strides forward, weight on front foot with his arm back ready to thrust his spear and kill Hektor.

This time the two warriors are watched by their respective patron deities.

Athena   -  wears a snake covered aegis and helmet.
              -  holds a spear in one hand encouraging her favourite on with the other.

Apollo    -  seems to be waving goodbye to his favourite and walking away leaving the doomed hero to die.
              -  is holding the arrow that will ultimately kill Achilles.
