Hotel Rwanda (2004)
Directed by Terry George

Genre, Rating and Length
This film is a biography/drama/history according to IMDb and it runs 121 minutes.  It is rated PG-13.

Grade Level and Audience
This film would be appropriate for mature audiences, such as 11 & 12 grade.  It would be appropriate in an English/language arts classroom, and also in a history or social studies classroom.

Relevant Common Core Standards for 11-12th grade
After watching this film and participating in the suggested activities, students should be able to:

  • Analyze a complex set of ideas or sequence of events and explain how specific individuals, ideas, or events interact and develop over the course of the text.
  • Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

Summary
Paul Rusesabagina was a Hutu hotel manager in Rwanda in 1994 when the Hutu started murdering the Tutsi (two warring tribes in the area).  Paul’s wife is a Tutsi and many of his friends are Tutsi as well.  As manager of the hotel, he takes in and houses displaced Tutsi refugees when their homes are burned and ransacked.  This based on a true story movie follows the events of what happened to Paul and the Tutsis that he housed in the hotel.

Thematic and Textual Connections
This film is very powerful by itself, but would be even more powerful when linked to a unit on genocide.  Other thematic connections would be bravery, family, and war.  This movie would help to give a lot of insight and add information to any book dealing with war, but especially to Long Way from Home and Diary of Anne Frank

Strengths and Unique Characteristics of the Film
This film provides new knowledge to a somewhat mysterious situation.  We all know that there are civil wars all across Africa, but not many of us know the true devastation and destruction associated with these wars.  This film helps to bring to light some of the issues that Africans face and it also helps viewers to visualize this event in history.

Possible Objections
Objections to this film would be things such as the images of dead bodies throughout, and the immense amount of violence and hatred portrayed.  I do think though, that these images are important in getting the entire message of the movie across.  I wouldn’t suggest this film to a younger or immature audience.  I would also suggest parental consent for the viewing of this film.

Awards and Reviews
This film was nominated for three Oscars.  It was also nominated for many more awards, which can be found on www.IMDb.com/title/tt0395169/.

Review by Roger Ebert (December 22, 2004)
“This all succeeds as riveting drama. "Hotel Rwanda" is not about hotel management, but about heroism and survival. Rusesabagina rises to the challenge. The film works not because the screen is filled with meaningless special effects, formless action and vast digital armies, but because Cheadle, Nolte and the filmmakers are interested in how two men choose to function in an impossible situation. Because we sympathize with these men, we are moved by the film.

Deep movie emotions for me usually come not when the characters are sad, but when they are good.

You will see what I mean.”

Review by Peter Howell, Toronto Star (January 7, 2005(
“The almost forgotten but all too real African genocide documented in Hotel Rwanda hits us as suddenly and as hard as it does Paul Rusesabagina, the accidental hero played so masterfully by Don Cheadle.”

Previewing Activities

  • Define genocide.  What does it mean to you in your world today?  Use a KWL chart to fill in what you know, what you want to know, and at the end, what you’ve learned.
  • Research civil wars in Africa to gain a better understanding of the background of this conflict.  Focus on information about the Hutu and the Tutsi and the conflict between them.  Why are they at odds with one another?  What caused the problem?  How far back does it go in history?
  • Locate Rwanda on a map.  Where is it in comparison to the other major conflicts in Africa?
  • Have students define bravery.  What does it mean to them?  What was the bravest thing that they have ever done?
  • What is something that you would put yourself in danger for?  Is there a certain “cause” that you feel strongly about?

Viewing Day #1
Approx. 30 minutes
Beginning Monologueà Soldiers let everyone in Paul’s house go after he has paid them

Key sequence: Paul gives the solider all of the money he has to let his Tutsi friends go free.

This sequence shows the depth of the conflict.  We see that the Hutu soldiers can be bribed with money and other valuable items.  In this sequence, Paul shows the audience the depth of his love and commitment to the safety of his family and friends.  We learn more about the conflict between the two sides and witness our first real display of violence and hatred toward our main characters.

Discussion Questions

  • Why does the story line begin with the audience viewing several acts of bribery?  What does this tell us about the Hutu soldiers?
  • What do we learn about Paul’s character in this section?  Do we learn anything about him and his family that might cause trouble later in the movie?
  • Make a prediction about this film.  What do you think will happen to the characters that we have met so far?
  • Speculate on the title of the film.  What meaning does it have to you now?  What meaning do you think it will have as the film progresses?

Viewing Day #2
Approx. 40 minutes
Paul is put in charge of the hotel where he works à Paul drives to get supplies from his “friend” George, who threatens Paul because he knows that he is housing Tutsi in the hotel

Key sequence: The president of Sabina (the hotel chain in which Paul works) tells Paul that “there will be no rescue,” that he can’t find any help for Paul and the hotel.  Paul tells the patrons and staff of the hotel that they should call their loved ones in other countries and ask them for help

This sequence is probably the most important of the entire film.  The dialogue in this sequence is so important to the entire plot because they reveal the true story line.  This sequence shows just how bad things have gotten in Rwanda and how desperate the people in the hotel are for help.  We see Paul’s bravery shine through as he calmly tells everyone that they must prepare to die.

Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think the “whites” left?  Why did the helping armies pull out of the situation?  If you were President of the U.S. at that time, what would you have done?
  • If you were Paul, what would be running through your head as all of this unfolds?  Do you think you would have been able to keep as calm as he had been?
  • If you knew that your death was quickly approaching, what would you do on your last days on earth?
  • What does the title of this film mean to you now?  How has the meaning changed since the beginning of the film?

Viewing Day #3
Approx. 25 minutes
Paul and Gregoire drive through the fog after getting supplies and drive over dead bodies à The ambushed UN convoy is forced to return to the hotel, instead of getting those who have secured visas safely out of the country

Key sequence: Paul and Gregoire drive over dead bodies.  Paul breaks down in the locker room and shows his true emotions and feelings about what is happening.

This sequence is important because the audience realizes the magnitude of the killings.  We begin to think of the situation as pure hatred and genocide instead of war.  This sequence tugs at our heartstrings and allows us to empathize with Paul.

Discussion Questions

  • How does the image of the dead bodies in the road speak to you?  Have you ever seen an image like this before?  What are some other images that make speak to you this same way?
  • Why do you think Paul jumped off of the UN convoy at the last second?  What do you think was running through his head?  His wife’s head?
  • Was Paul’s wife right or wrong to be so mad at him after he left her on the truck, which then came under attack?
  • How do the events in this sequence change your opinion of the film, the characters, the situation, etc.?  How has the tone of the piece changed?
  • What do you think will happen next?  How will the movie end?

Viewing Day #4
Approx. 25 minutes
The water to the hotel is turned off and people start drinking out of the pool à End

Key sequence: The UN trucks start driving all of the refugees towards what they think is safety.  Along the way, they are almost stopped again, but the real army begins shooting down the Hutu rebels, and the UN convoy is able to cross the front lines into safety.

Discussion Questions

  • What did you think of the end of this movie?  Were your emotions and tension running high or did you predict this ending?
  • What do you think will happen to the Hutu rebels and the displaced Tutsi?  Do you know anything about this conflict today?
  • How did the director show passage of time?  What effect do you think this had on the impact of the film?

Closing Questions/Activities

  • Research this conflict.  Is it over?  If not, can you propose a resolution to the conflict?
  • Research the validity of this movie.  How far from the truth did it stray?  Do you think that the director/writer were justified in their changes?  Or do you think that they should have stuck more closely to the real story.
  • Where are these main characters now?  What is Paul doing with his life?  His wife?  Kids?  What about the other main characters?
  • Complete and finish the original KWL chart, adding what you have learned throughout the watching of this film and the involved research.
