Character List

Julius Caesar – Successful military leader who wants to be crowned king of Rome.  Ruled Rome as part of a 3-man triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus.  Caesar now wants the crown for himself.  He’s easily flattered, overly ambitious, superstitious, and suffers from epilepsy. 

Marcus Brutus – highly respected judge in Rome, friend of Caesar, noble

Mark Antony – Caesar’s loyal friend, militarily accomplished, skilled speaker, reputation for fun living

Caius Cassius – Brutus’ brother-in-law, scheming, plans the plot to murder Caesar

Portia – Brutus’ wife; daughter of Marcus Cato, a respected man in Rome

Calpurnia – Caesar’s wife, superstitious, concerned for her husband

Octavius Caesar – Julius Caesar’s great nephew and heir, capable soldier, later becomes Augustus Caesar, emperor of the Roman Empire

Conspirators -

              Casca – first to stab Caesar

              Cinna – wants Cassius to persuade Brutus to join the conspiracy, puts letters in                  Brutus’ house

              Decius Brutus – persuades Caesar to go to the capitol on March 15 by    reinterpreting Calpurnia’s dream and saying the Senate will crown him king that            day

              Metellus Cimber – distracts Caesar’s attention at the capitol by asking for his               brother’s punishment be repealed which allows the conspirators to surround
Caesar and stab him

              Trebonius – lures Mark Antony out of the capitol so Antony won’t interfere with               Caesar’s murder- the only conspirator who doesn’t stab Caesar

              Caius Ligarius - The reluctantly assassin, he at first hesitates in killing Caesar,    but later enthusiastically follows the others in killing Caesar after Brutus restores      his conviction.

Soothsayer – fortune teller who tells Caesar “Beware the Ides of March” (Act I)

Artemidorus – gives Caesar a letter with all of the conspirators’ names as Caesar enters the Capitol, fortune teller (Act III)

Flavius and Marullus – Pompey supporters who are upset over Caesar’s victory and want the celebration to stop (Act I)

Cinna the poet – innocent bystander who is killed by an upset mob following Antony’s funeral speech. (Act III)
M. Aemilius Lepidus -The last of the Triumvirs, this old man holds little real power and is used in Mark Antony's own words as a loyal, trusted man fit to run errands. (Act IV)
Cicero - A well-known orator and Senator, Cicero is killed by the Triumvirs (Mark Antony, Octavius and Lepidus) following Caesar's assassination.
Publius - A Senator who travels with Caesar to the Senate House the day Caesar is killed, he witnesses Caesar's assassination. Though deeply "confounded" or confused and shaken by the assassination of Caesar he is used by Brutus to tell the citizens of Rome that Caesar aside, no one else will be hurt. (Act III)
Popilius Lena - The Senator who terrifies Cassius by telling Cassius that he hopes his "enterprise [assassination attempt] today may thrive" or be successful just as Caesar goes into the Senate house on the "ides of March." (Act III)
Lucilius, Titinius, Messala, Volumnius - Friends to Brutus and Cassius (Acts IV & V)

Young Cato – Brutus’ brother in law, Portia’s brother, who dies in battle (Act V)

Pindarus – A servant to Cassius, he is also the messenger bearing the wrong news and asks him to hold a sword out for him to run into, the very sword, Cassius used against Caesar (Act V)

Varro, Clitus, Claudius, Strato, Lucius, Dardanius - Servants to Brutus (Acts II, IV, V)
