Abstract

 

This paper covers diagnosing and understanding dyslexia. First, the definitions as found by several known authorities are presented, showing that there is a lot of dissension, even among experts, as to what exactly encompasses the definition of dyslexia. Next, the ways to determine if a person of any age possibly has dyslexia is examined. The conclusion discusses ways that teachers can recognize dyslexia and enable all of us to adjust lesson plans and encourage a student that has dyslexia.


According to Wikipedia, dyslexia is a learning disability that manifests itself primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading. “It is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as a nonneurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction.” (Stanovich, 1988) Evidence suggests that dyslexia results from differences in how the brain processes written and spoken language. “Although dyslexia is thought to be the result of a neurological difference, it is not an intellectual disability.  Dyslexia is diagnosed in people of all levels of intelligence.” http://www.schwablearning.org/articles.aspx?r=718

However, when you start researching this subject, you find that there are multiple definitions for what we all thought, in the past, was a person’s inability to read words the way “we do.”  We all thought it was people looking at a word and seeing it backwards or the letters out of order. There is much information on this and much dissension as to what it really is.

According to the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), “dyslexia is one of several distinct learning disabilities. It is a specific language-based disorder of constitutional origin characterized by difficulties in single word decoding, usually reflecting insufficient phonological processing. These difficulties in single word decoding are often unexpected in relation to age and other cognitive and academic abilities; they are not the result of generalized developmental disability or sensory impairment. Dyslexia is manifested by variable difficulty with different forms of language, often including, in addition to problems reading, a conspicuous problem with acquiring proficiency in writing and spelling.”  http://www.interdys.org/FAQ.htm

So what exactly is dyslexia and how do we know if someone has it?   And can adults have it as well as children?  Does it affect people from other cultures?  The answer to the last two questions is yes. The first question is answered in this article. There are many indicators of dyslexia, not just reading or writing letters in incorrect sequence. And sometimes someone has dyslexia and they don’t have a reading/writing problem at all. Sometimes they cannot learn how to speak or actually “organize” their thoughts so that they can speak in sentences and allow others to understand what they mean. Sometimes they have problems with actually learning letters and how to “sound them out.”  They often cannot memorize number facts, cannot spell, read, learn foreign languages, or do math calculations properly. The only way that you can absolutely know if someone has dyslexia is to have them tested by a professional.

There are difficulties in determining whether or not an adult has dyslexia because, without having a proper diagnosis, their symptoms are sometimes masked by things such as trying to hide the truth about their difficulties in reading and spelling. They will ask someone else how to spell a word or they just never write anything. And these adult dyslexics are often very good at communicating orally, with excellent memorization skills and the ability to get along with others so well that no one notices that they cannot read and write. Some professions that actually have a wide profusion of dyslexics as their members are engineers, artists, physicians, and craftspeople. They are often very intuitive about others so that they can “read” what a person wants from them without having the true ability to read their own job objectives. Sadly, some dyslexics work in jobs far less demanding of what their true intellectual capacity merits. Their problems with planning and detail-oriented tasks make it difficult for them to have management positions in a “normal” work force; for this reason, many are entrepreneurs and are very successful financially. They found a way to get around their problem.

“Identifying dyslexia in adulthood presents particular challenges because of complicating factors such as acquisition of compensatory strategies, differing degrees of intervention and the problem of distinguishing dyslexic adults from those whose literacy difficulties have non-cognitive causes. One of the implications is that conventional literacy measures, per se, do not provide a satisfactory basis for screening for dyslexia in adulthood as some dyslexic adults have above-average literacy skills and some non-dyslexic adults have very poor literacy skills.” (Singleton, et al, 2009)  Singleton and his colleagues examined an “alternative approach to dyslexia screening, using three tests that depend heavily on phonological processing, lexical access and working memory, but which are not conventional measures of literacy.” (Singleton, et al, 2009)  Their results showed that “the dyslexic and non-dyslexic groups were significantly different on all three computer-based tests, with an average effect size of 1.55.”  (Singleton, et al, 2009) It was concluded that this approach is a valid and useful method of identifying dyslexia in adulthood, which, given the ease of administration to large numbers of adults, has noted advantages for education and employment.” (Singleton, et al, 2009)

In young children, particularly those in preschool, dyslexics tend to be children who talk later than is normally accepted and have a problem adding new words to their vocabularies, cannot rhyme, and cannot follow directions that aren’t given to them one by one.  

“Developmental dyslexia is the most common learning disability in school-aged children with an estimated incidence of five to ten percent. The cause and pathophysiological substrate of this developmental disorder is unclear.” (Baillieux, et al, 2009)   In this study, control subjects showed “bilaterally well-defined and focal activation patterns in the frontal and parietal lobes and the posterior regions of the cerebellar hemispheres. The dyslexic children, however, presented widespread and diffuse activations on the cerebral and cerebellar level. Cerebral activations were found in frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital regions.”  (Baillieux, et al, 2009)   This study concluded with the suggestion that dyslexia is a “disorder of the processing or transfer of information within the cerebellar cortex.”   (Baillieux, et al, 2009)

Older children, who are already in school, reveal signs of dyslexia when they show an inability to read words printed on flashcards, problems connecting sounds for letters to form words, confusing “small” words such as “at” or “to,” word and letter reversals such as b and d or bus and sub. However, just because a child presents with one of these problems before the age of seven, does not necessarily mean they are dyslexic. This is actually common in younger children so, only if they continue to have this problem and if it is something that has been a problem in their family in the past, should they be tested.

There have been studies which indicate difficulty in phoneme perception for dyslexic spellers and that the difficulty is appropriate for their level of literacy development but not for their age or grade in school.  (Bernstein, Stuart E., 2009)  

So, despite average, and often superior, intelligence, dyslexia actually can cause a problem with reading, writing, spelling and speaking because of the fact that their brains are organized differently. The normal instruction given for reading just will not work for them. Also it is important to note that this can be a genetic abnormality, which means that it has a biological root as its cause. Because people with this problem are often very talented, with superior abilities that are usually associated with visual-spatial skills, it makes their reading deficit, in an area that seems so basic and elementary, confusing. Because dyslexia can also affect a person’s self-image, it is very important for it to be caught early. Teachers should be aware of what to look for and adapt their lesson plans to accommodate their differences. Parents should be consulted and urged to have the student tested as early as possible so that the students don’t end up feeling “dumb” and less capable than they actually are. After experiencing a great deal of stress due to academic problems, a student may become discouraged about continuing in school. Teachers can constantly encourage them and include in their lessons, as it comes up, the fact that, for instance,  Albert Einstein was dyslexic. There is no subject being taught that doesn’t have a very successful dyslexic member to use as a brilliant example of what can be done to overcome this difference and be very successful in life.

WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC CLUES/SIGNS OF DYSLEXIA

IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

The earliest clues involve mostly spoken language. The very first clue to a language (and reading) problem may be delayed language. Once the child begins to speak, look for the following problems:

The Preschool Years

    • Trouble learning common nursery rhymes such as "Jack and Jill" and "Humpty Dumpty"
    • A lack of appreciation of rhymes
    • Mispronounced words; persistent baby talk
    • Difficulty in learning (and remembering) names of letters
    • Failure to know the letters in his own name
    • Difficulty learning to talk*
    • Difficulty pronouncing words correctly or expressing ideas clearly*
    • Difficulty listening and following directions*
    • Difficulty remembering names, symbols, or lists*

 

Kindergarten and First Grade

    • Failure to understand that words come apart; for example, that batboy can be pulled apart into bat and boy, and, later on, that the word bat can be broken down still further and sounded out as: "b" "aaaa" "t"
    • Inability to learn to associate letters with sounds, such as being unable to connect the letter b with the "b" sound
    • Reading errors that show no connection to the sounds of the letters; for example, the word big is read as goat
    • The inability to read common one-syllable words or to sound out even the simplest of words, such as mat, cat, hop, nap
    • Complaints about how hard reading is, or running and hiding when it is time to read
    • A history of reading problems in parents or siblings.
    • Difficulty in learning the alphabet*
    • Difficulty sequencing and/or forming letters or numbers*
    • Difficulty learning to read, write, and spell*
    • Poor sense of time or space, before and after, left and right, months and days*
    • Messy handwriting*
    • Skips words in a sentence and doesn’t stop to self correct**
    • Can’t remember words-sounds out the same word every time it occurs on the page**
    • Frequently guesses at unknown words rather than sound them out**

 

In addition to the problems of speaking and reading, you should be looking for these indications of strengths in higher-level thinking processes:

    • Curiosity
    • A great imagination
    • The ability to figure things out
    • Eager embrace of new ideas
    • Getting the gist of things
    • A good understanding of new concepts
    • Surprising maturity
    • A large vocabulary for the age group
    • Enjoyment in solving puzzles
    • Talent at building models
    • Excellent comprehension of stories read or told to him

 

 

FROM SECOND GRADE ON

            Problems in Speaking

    • Mispronunciation of long, unfamiliar, or complicated words; the fracturing of words–leaving out parts of words or confusing the order of the parts of words; for example, aluminum becomes amulium
    • Speech that is not fluent–pausing or hesitating often when speaking, lots of um's during speech, no glibness
    • The use of imprecise language, such as vague references to stuff or things instead of the proper name of an object
    • Not being able to find the exact word, such as confusing words that sound alike: saying tornado instead of volcano, substituting lotion for ocean, or humanity for humidity
    • The need for time to summon an oral response or the inability to come up with a verbal response quickly when questioned
    • Difficulty in remembering isolated pieces of verbal information (rote memory) — trouble remembering dates, names, telephone numbers, random lists

Problems in Reading

    • Very slow progress in acquiring reading skills
    • The lack of a strategy to read new words
    • Trouble reading unknown (new, unfamiliar) words that must be sounded out; making wild stabs or guesses at reading a word; failure to systematically sound out words
    • The inability to read small "function" words such as that, an, in
    • Stumbling on reading multisyllable words, or the failure to come close to sounding out the full word
    • Omitting parts of words when reading; the failure to decode parts within a word, as if someone had chewed a hole in the middle of the word, such as conible for convertible
    • A terrific fear of reading out loud; the avoidance of oral reading
    • Oral reading filled with substitutions, omissions, and mispronunciations
    • Oral reading that is choppy and labored, not smooth or fluent
    • Oral reading that lacks inflection and sounds like the reading of a foreign language
    • A reliance on context to discern the meaning of what is read
    • A better ability to understand words in context than to read isolated single words
    • Disproportionately poor performance on multiple choice tests
    • The inability to finish tests on time
    • The substitution of words with the same meaning for words in the text he can't pronounce, such as car for automobile
    • Disastrous spelling, with words not resembling true spelling; some spellings may be missed by spell check
    • Trouble reading mathematics word problems
    • Reading that is very slow and tiring
    • Homework that never seems to end, or with parents often recruited as readers
    • Messy handwriting despite what may be an excellent facility at word processing–nimble fingers
    • Extreme difficulty learning a foreign language
    • A lack of enjoyment in reading, and the avoidance of reading books or even a sentence
    • The avoidance of reading for pleasure, which seems too exhausting
    • Reading whose accuracy improves over time, though it continues to lack fluency and is laborious
    • Lowered self-esteem, with pain that is not always visible to others
    • A history of reading, spelling, and foreign language problems in family members

In addition to signs of a phonologic weakness, there are signs of strengths in higher-level thinking processes:

    • Excellent thinking skills: conceptualization, reasoning, imagination, abstraction
    • Learning that is accomplished best through meaning rather than rote memorization
    • Ability to get the "big picture"
    • A high level of understanding of what is read to him
    • The ability to read and to understand at a high level overlearned (that is, highly practiced) words in a special area of interest; for example, if his hobby is restoring cars, he may be able to read auto mechanics magazines
    • Improvement as an area of interest becomes more specialized and focused, when he develops a miniature vocabulary that he can read
    • A surprisingly sophisticated listening vocabulary
    • Excellence in areas not dependent on reading, such as math, computers, and visual arts, or excellence in more conceptual (versus factoid-driven) subjects such as philosophy, biology, social studies, neuroscience, and creative writing

 

 IN YOUNG ADULTS AND ADULTS

Problems in Speaking

    • Persistence of earlier oral language difficulties
    • The mispronunciation of the names of people and places, and tripping over parts of words
    • Difficulty remembering names of people and places and the confusion of names that sound alike
    • A struggle to retrieve words: "It was on the tip of my tongue"
    • Lack of glibness, especially if put on the spot
    • Spoken vocabulary that is smaller than listening vocabulary, and hesitation to say aloud words that might be mispronounced

Problems in Reading

    • A childhood history of reading and spelling difficulties
    • Word reading becomes more accurate over time but continues to require great effort
    • Lack of fluency
    • Embarrassment caused by oral reading: the avoidance of Bible study groups, reading at Passover seders, or delivering a written speech
    • Trouble reading and pronouncing uncommon, strange, or unique words such as people's names, street or location names, food dishes on a menu (often resorting to asking the waiter about the special of the day or resorting to saying, "I'll have what he's having," to avoid the embarrassment f not being able to read the menu)
    • Persistent reading problems
    • The substitution of made-up words during reading for words that cannot be pronounced–for example, metropolitan becomes mitan–and a failure to recognize the word metropolitan when it is seen again or heard in a lecture the next day
    • Extreme fatigue from reading
    • Slow reading of most materials: books, manuals, subtitles in foreign films
    • Penalized by multiple-choice tests
    • Unusually long hours spent reading school or work-related materials

WHAT ARE THE RELATED DISORDERS?

  • Dysgraphia- “a writing disability in which a person finds it hard to form letters, produce sustained and legible handwriting, and translate language into the handwritten form.”
  • Dyscalculia-“a mathematical disability in which a person has a difficult time calculating accurately and quickly, solving arithmetic problems, or grasping math concepts
