14- The Natural magnet was discovered in magnesia area.
15- The magnet takes many shapes as horse shoe and magnetic needle .
16- From magnetic substance is iron while plastic is from non- magnetic substances.
18- The magnet has two poles.
19- Like poles repel while unlike poles attract .
20- We can determine geographic directions by compass .
21- magnetic materials are the materials which are attracted to the magnet.
22- non-magnetic materials are the materials which are not attracted to the magnet.
23- The freely moving (suspended) magnet always takes a fixed direction, which is (north ,south) direction.
24- the magnet's pole that always refers to the north direction is called north pole
25- the magnet has most the powerful of attractions at its poles
26- The compass consists of small light magnet moves freely around a fixed axis.
27- when a magnet is hanged freely , its north pole is directed towards the north direction of earth.

Mention an example for:

  1. One shape of magnets.

(horse shoe – bar magnet – rectangular magnet – magnetic needle )

  1. Magnetic substance.

Iron – cobalt – nickel – stainless steel .

  1. Non-magnetic substance.

Plastic – wood – chalk – glass

  1. Instrument to determine geographical directions.

Compass (magnetic needle )

Compare between:
1-  Magnetic - Non-magnetic substances
2-  Natural magnet - man made magnet

           Magnetic materials

             Non- magnetic materials

They are materials that are attracted to the magnet .
Such as iron or cobalt.

They are materials that aren't attracted to the magnet .
Such as plastic or wood.

              Natural magnet

              Man mad magnet

Black rock stone and it's one of the iron ore that called magnetite

It's the magnet that mad by man and has different shapes such as (bar magnet or magnetic needle )

Give reasons for:
1. Using magnetic needle in compass.
Because it will take a fixed direction which is north and south direction. So, we can determine the four directions .

2. Iron is magnetic substance.
Because it's attract to the magnet

3. Glass is Non-magnetic substance.
Because it's not attract to the magnet.

4. The magnet attracts iron, but doesn't attract copper.
Because iron is a magnetic material but copper is not.

6. The north pole of a magnet attracts the south pole of another magnet, but repels the north pole.
Because the like poles repel each other but unlike poles attract

7. The compass is used to locate (determine) the main four directions.
Because it has a small magnetic needle that refers to north and south direction

8- some materials called magnetic materials.
Because they are attracted to the magnet .

What happens if:
1. North pole of magnet is closed to North pole of another .
They will repel each other ( repulsion force between similar poles)
2. you Hanged a magnet freely.
It will take north and south direction (north pole refers to north direction)

Write the scientific term:
1. The strongest area in magnet at two ends.                  (poles of the magnet)
2. The ability of magnet to attract things made of iron.    (magnetic force)
3. One of iron ore named magnetite.                               (natural magnet)
4. Instrument used to determine geographic directions.  (compass)
5. the space around the magnet in which the effect of magnetic force appears. (magnetic field)
6. The regions (areas) of magnet at which most of the magnetic materials are attracted.  (poles of the magnet)
7. the materials that are attracted to the magnet.       (magnetic materials)
8. the materials that are not attracted to the magnet. (non-magnetic materials)
9. The pole of the magnet which points to the north direction of the earth.
(north pole)
10. The pole of the magnet that repels with the north pole of another magnet.
(north pole)
11. the two ends of the magnet , where the magnetic force most powerful. (two poles)
12. the pole of the magnet that attracted with the north pole of another magnet.
(south pole)
13. a set is used for locating the main four geographical directions. (compass)
14. an object that consists of a small light magnetic needle that can spin freely around a fixed axis. (compass)

Magnetism and  Electricity

Correct the words between brekets:
1. The magnetic field can be generated by (electric) current.
2. The (electromagnet) is used in winch.
3. (dynamo) can be used to generate electricity.
4. Electric generator in bicycle uses a (small) magnet

Complete the following:
1. The electric generator changes kinetic energy to electric energy.
2. Power stations depend on the huge dynamo to generate electricity.
3. The electric current has magnetic effect when passing in wires.
4. Electromagnet can be used in cranes (big size winches) .
5. The scientist faraday discovered the idea of electric generator.
6. The best iron used in electromagnet is wrought iron.
7. The Dynamo in bicycle uses a small magnet.
8. the electric current produced by the electric generator ( dynamo) increases by increasing number of coil turns or using a strong magnet.
9. The magnetic force of the electromagnet can be increased by increasing the  number of coil turns and number of batteries.
11- when an electric current flows through a wire twisted ( winding)  around a wrought Irion nail, the nail becomes an electromagnet
12- the electro magnet consists of wrought iron, coil and dry battery.
13- when you move a coil between two poles of a magnet , electricity is generated in the coil.
14- the basic idea of the electric generator is the changing the kinetic energy into electric energy.
15- the apparatus  that converts kinetic energy is called dynamo
16 – a set is used to change the mechanical energy into electrical energy is called dynamo

Give reasons for:
1. The electric current has a magnetic effect.
Because it generates a magnetic field around the wire that has an electric current

2. Electromagnet has many uses.
We can use it in factories to lift the heavy iron blocks (by winches) and some electric devices as (electric mixer and TV)
3. Power stations use huge magnets.
To generate large amount of electricity enough to operate factories or lightning cities

4. The magnetic force increases by increase number of battery.
Due to increasing the intensity of electric current .
5.  A wrought iron nail is used for making the electromagnet.
Due to its ability in gaining or losing magnetism quickly .
(easy to be a magnet and easy to return back to its nature form)

6.  In the dynamo we must increase the motion of the coil between the two poles of magnet.
To increase the force of the dynamo in order to increase the electric current

7- Dynamo changes the mechanical energy into electric energy.
Because it converts the motion of the magnet (mechanical or kinetic energy) into electric current .

 What happens when:
1. A bar of wrought iron surrounded by wire contains electric current.
The wrought iron will be a temporary magnet (electromagnet)

2. A wire moves between-two poles of magnet.
An electric current generates in the wire.
