Meaning of presentation in the temple :

When possible, Jewish parents brought their newborn child to the Temple for an offering and a blessing. When Mary and Joseph bring Jesus (forty days after birth for a boy and so we celebrate it forty days after Christmas on February 2nd), both Anna and Simeon prophesy about the destiny of this child as a “light to the nations.” For that reason candles are traditionally blessed on the feast of the Presentation (also called at times Candlemas and at times feast of Mary’s purification).(Luke 2:22-38)
