The grouping of instruments based on how they create sound: by vibrating a column of air (e.g. flute, trumpet, clarinet), by being struck, scraped, or shaken (e.g. percussion such as cymbals and maracas), by striking or rubbing a membrane stretched across a resonating air chamber (e.g. drums), by striking, rubbing, or plucking a string (e.g. violin, guitar, piano), or by using an electronic process (e.g. synthesizers).
