Meaning and definition of compression :
Compression: The task of reducing the size—and resolution of digital files—using a computer program—so that they can be more easily stored and accessed. Compression rates are expressed in ratios that indicate how much compression has occurred: a 20:1 compression rate is high and a 2,1 compression rate is low. With an audio file, most people can’t easily detect a 10:1 compression ratio. The lower the rate of compression, the better the quality of a file—but also the more memory it requires to store on a computer.. Students’ video and audio projects, typicallly, are compressed when completed so that they can be stored on some portable medium like a CD or a DVD. The desire for high quality video must always be balanced against the desire for smaller files. (See also Bit Rate and Sampling Rate.)
