Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) Portuguese mariner, who was educated at the Portuguese court, and who embarked on what would become the first voyage to circumnavigate the globe.  Magellan’s voyage became the staging ground for Spain’s systematic exploration and colonization of the Americas. Magellan was seeking a route to the Spice Islands—just as Columbus had. After crossing the Atlantic, Magellan stopped in Brazil to resupply his ships. He then moved south, around the tip of South America, and through the straits that are named for him. He continued his voyage, crossing the Pacific in a four-month ordeal that included eating rats and sawdust, and drinking yellow water. Magellan’s funds and permission for his voyage did not come from Portugal but from Charles I of Spain (Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire). Magellan became involved in tribal warfare in the Philippines and was killed there in 1521. Only one of his five ships, the Victoria, and 18 of the original 280 men made it back to Spain in September, 1522, almost exactly three years after their departure.
