Metallic Bonds and Metallic Properties

Metals are made up of closely packed cations, not neutral atoms
The valence electrons of metal atoms are a sea of electrons surrounding metal cations

(just for pure metals, not ionic compounds)

metallic bonds: the attraction of negatively charged electrons for the positively charged metal ions

these bonds hold metals together

Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity
This is because electrons can flow freely in the sea of electrons

They are malleable (=hammered and forced into shapes) and ductile (=can be drawn into wires)
They are shapeable because the sea of electrons acts like a lubricant and metal cations can easily slide past one another
For ionic compounds, on the other hand, metal cations would repel each other and the crystal would shatter
Metal cations are arranged in compact and orderly patterns
