Metallic Bonds and Metallic Properties

  • Metals are made up of closely packed cations, not neutral atoms
  • The valence electrons of metal atoms are a sea of electrons surrounding metal cations
    • (just for pure metals, not ionic compounds)
  • metallic bonds: the attraction of negatively charged electrons for the positively charged metal ions
  • these bonds hold metals together
    • Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity
    • This is because electrons can flow freely in the sea of electrons

    • They are malleable (=hammered and forced into shapes) and ductile (=can be drawn into wires)
    • They are shapeable because the sea of electrons acts like a lubricant and metal cations can easily slide past one another
    • For ionic compounds, on the other hand, metal cations would repel each other and the crystal would shatter
    • Metal cations are arranged in compact and orderly patterns
