- Metals are made up of closely packed cations, not neutral atoms
- The valence electrons of metal atoms are a sea of electrons surrounding metal cations
- (just for pure metals, not ionic compounds)
- metallic bonds: the attraction of negatively charged electrons for the positively charged metal ions
- these bonds hold metals together
- Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity
- This is because electrons can flow freely in the sea of electrons
- They are malleable (=hammered and forced into shapes) and ductile (=can be drawn into wires)
- They are shapeable because the sea of electrons acts like a lubricant and metal cations can easily slide past one another
- For ionic compounds, on the other hand, metal cations would repel each other and the crystal would shatter
- Metal cations are arranged in compact and orderly patterns
