Meaning and definition of plane strain :

 

Plane strain: The stress condition in linear elastic fracture mechanics in which there is zero strain in a direction normal to both the axis of applied tensile stress and the direction of crack growth (i.e. parallel to the crack front), most nearly archieved in loading thick plates along and direction parallel to the plate surface. Under plane- strain condition, the plane of fracture instability is normal to the axis of the principal tensile stress.

 

For the term plane strain may also exist other definitions and meanings, the meaning and definition indicated above are indicative not be used for medical and legal or special purposes.
