The preserved and compressed remains of dead bog plants or moss, rich in nutrients and with a high water retention. Commonly used as a soil amendment, peat tends to add to the acidity of the soil pH. It is free from weeds and disease. Often known as peat moss because it is from sphagnum or sedge.
