Bartolome de las Casas

Bartolome de las Casas (1474-1566) A lawyer trained at the University of Salamanca, who was ordained as a secular priest in 1510, and who eventually joined the Dominican order, Las Casas was horrified by the decimation of the native populations of the Greater Antilles, and became an impassioned advocate for the Indians. His most famous account of his experiences is his Breuissima Relacion de la Destryucion de las Indias (Seville, 1552). Las Casas' legacy has been somewhat tarnished by his role in encouraging black slavery in the Americas. African slavery had been introduced in the Antilles as early as 1505. Las Casas himself brought seven personal slaves with him when he returned from a trip to Spain in 1517. Las Casas’ advocacy of Indian rights on the one hand, and the expansion of African slavery on the other are suggestive of some of the differences between Iberian and British attitudes toward race and slavery.
