Hitler and his henchmen

Hitler and his henchmen

Adolf Hitler
Hitler was born in Linz Austria in 1889 his dad was a customs official and his mum was a housewife. They did not have much money and his dad was a violent drunkard. He adored his mum and her death at the age of 18 was a devastating blow to young Adolf. He was a loner at school and was lazy. After he left school he went to Vienna and lived the life of a hobo and lived a downmarket hostels and flitted from job to job. It was here that he got his hatred of Jews and Communists. When was declared in 1914 he went toi Munich and joined the German army. He was a brave soldier and won many medals before almost dying in a gas attack towards the end of the war. When he received news of Germany’s defeat he was devastated and blames the socialist government, the communists and the Jews.

After the war he was employed by the army to spy upon small parties. In 1919 he was asked to spy on small right wing group called the German Workers Party (DAP). It had only six members but he was impressed by their ideas and joined them. The main parties of the party were

  • All Germans united in one country
  • The scrapping of the Treaty of Versailles
  • Land for the German people in Eastern Europe
  • Jews stripped of their German nationality

He renamed the party the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP or Nazis for short) and helped it to grow in Bavaria – this was the most conservative of German states and a ripe breeding ground for the Nazis. Hitler began to organise the party on professional lines and in 1921 he set up the SA – a bunch of thugs to protect meetings and to intimidate opponents. This army dressed in brown shirts and became well known in Munich. He also gave the party a symbol – the Swastika. This was a traditional Buddhist sign meaning peace. It quickly became one of the most well known political symbols in Germany. Hitler also designed the party flag which was based on the traditional German colours of white, black and red. By 1922 he was the undisputed leader of the party – he made very good speeches and used modern methods to win over the minds of his listeners.

Hitlers Henchmen
Hitler was fortunate in that he had many able people in the Party in the immediate years when he joined it. Josef Goebbels was the son of an army officer who had escaped service in WW1 through medical reasons. He was small and weedy but very intelligent – he joined the Nazis in 1922 and became the editor of the main Nazi newspaper. He was a master at using propaganda to get the Nazi’s message across.

Hermann Goering was a WW1 hero who had shot down 22 enemy aircraft. He was a larger than life character who was vain and greedy – he joined the Nazis in 1922 and was put in charge of the SA.

Rudolf Hess was a soldier in WW1 and joined the Nazis in 1920 – he was the opposite to Hitler – a hard worker who stayed in the background. He became Hitler’s secretary.

Heinrich Himmler was an ex chicken farmer who was hard working and ambitious. He joined the party in 1923 and was seen as the rising star of the party.

Ernst Rohm had been a captain in the German army during WW1 and was a tough and brutal character. He had joined the Freikorps and was involved in the crushing of the Spartacist rising at the end of the war. He was one of the founders of the DAP in 1919 and supported Hitler when he became leader. He was responsible for founding the SA in 1921.
